I would have to see the enclosures to judge for myself whether or not they are humane. Even if they are, I am sorry to say that "most" is not good enough in my opinion. I don't believe that our own desire to save more human lives, to make our lives more convenient, or whatever else your research is used for, justifies keeping animals in the conditions shown above. Especially intelligent ones like primates. There are other ways to do research. Even if "progress" would have be slower.

I don't believe you have shown that anyone has lied. There are 2 sides to every argument, and I would have to see their perspective before leaping to that conclusion. You have shown only your interpretation of their actions.

Thank you.

Remember that most of the monkeys in Oregon are housed in large outdoor enclosures with hundreds of other monkeys.

When animals are housed inside for research that *saves millions of lives* they are treated humanely. This post is to show that PETA are willing to lie to get their message out - if that's the type of organization you want to support then that is your choice.

I have viewed the videos. I am astounded that Speaking for Research, or anyone for that matter, could think of this as a defense! Whether the monkeys are bouncing around the cage all of the time or only when someone is looking them in the eye; whether or not the monkey is perched several feet above when someone is spraying the cage, the conditions are deplorable. Monkeys are intelligent creatures. Read about them. Learn what their natural habitat is like. Learn about how they spend their time when living freely. Learn about how much habitat they use, how much they move from day to day.

Can anyone think they are happy? Would you want your cat or dog to live its life in such conditions? Would you want to live this way yourself?

I have never been involved with PETA in any way, but as a result of stumbling onto this website, I plan to become a PETA supporter!

May the people of Speaking for Research and the Orgeon Primate Research Center, and anyone else who keeps animals in such conditions, take a good long look at themselves, and a good long look into the eyes of their "subjects", and see the suffering they are causing. And then change their actions.

As a former animal care technician at this facility, I am pleased that someone FINALLY is telling the truth. I had major concerns when I first took the position, but had just relocated and needed a pay-check. I had expreience as a veterinary technician when I applied for the research job. The aninmals I cared for were for the most part calm and behaved normally once they got used to my presence (as your videos show). Many of the animals on the PETA video are animals I know well, and I was distressed to see them behaving in a manner that was not typical. It was painfully obvious that they were being provoked or harrassed. Some of the behavior on the PETA video is that of aggression and would only be caused if the animals felt threatened. A camera or direct eye contact would do just that. During my training at the center, I was taught how to best interact with the animals to keep stress levels low. It is important for the animals health and the validity of the studies. Thank you!

Here's another interesting story about PeTA, this time thanks to the Pharyngula blog http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/08/that_crazy_canadian_news_story.php#more.

PeTA appear to have annoyed a lot of people in Canada by comparing the slaughter of farm animals to the murder of a young man named Tim McLean on a bus. Thankfully local newspapers did not print the advertisement.

At least PeTA have the comfort of knowing that they're not alone, the notorious Westboro Baptist church were planning to picket Tim McLean's funeral, but were prevented from doing so by Canadian authorities.

PeTA and the Westboro Baptists, now there's two organizations that deserve each other!
